The New Testament Ordiance of the Lord's Supper

This ordinance is known as: the Lord’s Supper 1 Corinthian 11:20, because Christ instituted it, the communion 1 Corinthian 10:16, because of the common participation of saints, and the Eucharist, 1 Corinthian 11:24, meaning the giving of thanks.

There are four distinct doctrinal positions of this doctrinal ordinance.

  1. Transubstantiation…..the catholic doctrine that the bread and win mysteriously change into the actual body and blood of the Lord.
  2. Consubstantiation…..Certain Protestant bodies believe that while the bread and wine retain their natural elements yet the body and blood of Christ are in and with the elements
  3. Mystical Present Theory…..This view denies the corporal presence of Christ in the elements, but holds that the communicant partakes of and benefits by the mystical present of the human nature of Christ.
  4. Symbolic…..This is the Bible view.  There can possibly be no merit received from the act itself.  The reward comes in obeying God’s word and following the design and purpose of the ordinance.

What is the scriptural purpose and design of the Lord’s Supper?

    • Christ states its design when He instituted it, “This do in remembrance of me”.
    • The Lord’s Supper is a memorial whereby we demonstrate to the world and remember for ourselves the atoning suffering and death of Christ for us. ! Corinthians 11:26.
    • The Passover feast looked forward to the vicarious sacrificial suffering of Christ, the Lord’s Supper points backward to it.
    • The Lord’s Supper also symbolizes the unity of God’s people.  In commemorating it we are drawn not only closer to God but closer to one another.  1 Corinthian. 10:16,17.
    • It also shows the unity in the sense that we are one bread.  The scriptures symbolized us as wheat, and surely every grain of wheat will produce one bread.
    • Who are qualified to partake of the Lord’s Supper?  Only the Disciples of Christ.  Acts 20:7
    • It is not a party or a feast 1 Corinthian 11:20:22
    • Participants must be a born again believer living right with God. 1 Corinthian 11:27-29
    • Even believers should not partake unworthily.  1 Corinthian 11:27-32.

The Lord's Supper is also commanded in the Word of God (Matt 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:19-20) as a memorial feast (Luke 22:19; I Cor 11:26) and as such, is practiced by the saints of God.

The Traditional Church, The Lord’s Supper is observed monthly, quarterly, or annually.

In the New Testament Church, the Lord’s Supper was observed as often as the church regularly gathered, and was the stated purpose for their meetings.  (Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 11:18-20, 33)

The Traditional Church, observed the Lord’s Supper with a piece of cracker and a sip of juice.

In the New Testament Church, the Lord’s Supper was observed as a full meal.  (Acts 2:42, 46;  1 Cor. 11:20, 21).

The Traditional Church, observance of the Lord’s Supper is like a solemn funeral atmosphere as the worshippers reflect on Christ’s sufferings and death.  The believer’s vertical relationship with Christ is emphasized.  And public confession of sins are made.

In the New Testament Church, The Lord’s Supper was observed with  glad and sincere hearts as the church not only reflected on Christ’s death, but also on the future marriage supper of the Lamb which it depicted.  The believer’s horizontal relationship with other believers was emphasized. (Acts 2:46; Luke 22:15-18, 30; 1 Corinthian 11:26; Acts 2:42; 1 Corinthian 10:16).
