Philadelphia Rev. 3:7-13 Philadelphia (brotherly love) – a city of the province of Lydia in western Asia Minor (Modern Turkey) and the site of one of the seven churches of Asia. Philadelphia was situated on the Cogamus River, a tributary of the Hermus (modern Gediz) and was about 28 miles southeast of sardis. It was founded by Attalus II Philadelphus, who reigned as king of Pergamos from 159 B.C. until 138 B.C. Philedelphia was a center of the wine industry. It’s chief deity was Dionysus, in Geek mythology the god of win (The Roman Bacchus). John describes the church in Philadelphia as the faithful church and the church that stood at the gateway of great opportunity. Christ said to this church, “See, I have set before you an open door and no one can shut it” (vs. 8). The “open door” means primarily access to God, but it also refers to opportunity for spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. Still a city of considerable size, Philadelphia is known today as Alashehir. · I know thy works. I know thy works of righteous deeds, and I have set before thee a open door ( the door of opportunity), and no man can shut it. (No man can take this opportunity from thee), Why? Because of their spiritual strength, they kept His word (Obedience), and didn’t deny His name (His authority) and that Jesus Christ stood for). Rev. 3:9. God wil let everyone know who and what his approval is upon, why? That we may not be ashamed. So we see God is guaranteed to manifest himself on this behalf). Why? Because thou has kept the word of my patience 9kept the word with consisted endurance). Hold fast that, which we have, (Quickly hold firm, without hesitantly), that no man take thy crown (victory), I will make you a Pillar in the Temple ( One who is unmovable and able to stand the test of time. Just like the old pillars from the Grecian and Roman period, All they know to do is stand. They are yet standing today. Your reward shall be the name of God (The Word of God – the truth). A name of the city (New Jerusalem). A new name, the name of Jesus will I write upon him who overcometh.Rev. 19:11-14. Next |
